Why This Project?
In a national survey of more than 100,000 US college students, 80% reported being interested in spirituality, 76% were interested in a search for meaning or purpose in life and 47% said that they considered the opportunity to grow spiritually as “essential” or “very important.”
The Spirituality Project answers this call.
Our mission is to build a healthy, peaceful community and world through mindfulness practices and events that encourage inquiry, equanimity, and compassion. Drawing from a variety of mindfulness based wisdom traditions, texts, and guest teachers, we provide a space to let go of life’s stress and anxiety, learn meditation techniques, and connect to ourselves and others in a safe and inclusive community. Closely collaborating with the NYU Center for Spiritual Life, the NYU Wellness Exchange and the Bronfman Center, our programming weaves throughout classrooms, social spaces, residence halls and the internet, utilizing both ancient techniques and the latest technology to bring mindfulness into our daily lives.
Our Goals
1. To offer meditation and mindfulness practice workshops and classes to the NYU and the wider community in an integrated and ongoing manner in order to build a foundation of mental health, self-care, compassion and inner transformation on campus.
2. To nurture an exchange of ideas and a vibrant community via the web, utilizing social networks, blogging, and digital media in order to support our individual and collective journeys towards awakened living.
3. To become a replicable model for campuses across the country to develop dynamic contemplative programming for its students, faculty and staff, and for the wider community.
